Because of the high value and rarity of certain jewelry, some people like to store their jewelry in a safe when not in use. If you have individual gemstones, a soft pouch is good for keeping them from coming in contact with other hard surfaces. Store silver jewelry and gold-plated jewelry in a cool, dry place, preferably in a soft piece of felt or cloth.

For at-home storage we recommend storing your wedding rings and other jewelry in separate compartments within a jewelry box to prevent scratches or tangles. Be careful using ultrasonic cleaners, as only certain gemstones can handle the ultrasonic vibrations. Diamond cleaners usually contain ammonia and water. Using a soft brush you can remove dust or dirt from under the setting. Silver jewelry can be cleaned with our Diamonds Direct silver polishing cloth, with or without a special silver cleaning solution. If you are uncomfortable cleaning your own jewelry, swing by and have us clean and inspect your jewelry free of charge.

If stones fall out during a basic cleaning, there is a resetting fee. Additional charges to repair and replace the cause (i.e. prongs, broken stone) will also apply. We recommend this service at least twice a year. More thorough cleanings are available for a fee depending on the service needed

Bridal jewelry, such as engagement rings and wedding bands are typically worn daily and can appear like they’ve lost their sparkle if not cleaned on a regular basis. Lotions put film on diamonds and reduce their shininess. To care for your engagement ring and wedding band, don’t wear diamond jewelry while doing rough work. Avoid chlorinated pools and hot tubs. Avoid touching diamonds with your fingers, as smudges can affect a diamond’s luster and fire.

For at-home cleaning use our Diamonds Direct specially formulated jewelry cleaner which can be purchased in-store or online. Alternatively, you can prepare a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap to form a gentle cleaning solution. Soak your wedding rings in the solution for about 15-20 minutes to loosen any dirt or residue and use a soft toothbrush to gently remove any remaining dirt.

Gemstone jewelry should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. With gemstone jewelry, you should generally avoid sudden temperature changes. If you have a very active lifestyle, you may want to refrain from wearing your gemstone rings and bracelets throughout the day. Some gemstones are very brittle, especially emeralds, whereas rubies have a hardness second to that of the diamond (which is 4-5 times harder).

For pearls we recommend using a soft cotton cloth or jewelry cloth to gently wipe down pearls. This can help restore their natural luster.
